In vitro fertilisation is a common treatment method for infertility. Gaining publicity since recent times of modern advancement, it has gifted the happiness of children to numerous couples. However, the failure cases can be due to a lack of the right medical advice and luck. Helping you with the first, we look forward to increasing the second as well, contributing to the overall highest success rate.

    What is IVF?

It refers to In Vitro fertilisation (IVF), a method of assisted reproduction. It involves fusing the egg (obtained from a woman) and sperm (obtained from a man) outside the body. Post fertilisation, if the successful development of an embryo occurs, it is implanted into the body of the mother/ surrogate to carry out pregnancy through natural processes.

What Are the Steps of In Vitro Fertilisation?

It is a five-step procedure, carried out as follows:

Step 1: Stimulating the woman’s body to increase egg production for better chances of fertilisation

Step 2: Minor surgery involving follicular aspiration or egg retrieval. If a woman cannot produce eggs, the donated eggs can be used.

Step 3: The extracted eggs and sperm of the partner or donor are allowed to fuse naturally. Alternatively, doctors may directly inject the sperm into the egg, where the procedure is referred to as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The procedure might be done routinely for successful fertilisation.

Step 4: The fertilised egg develops into an embryo. It requires keen monitoring and evaluation of conditions for growth. More medical advancements have allowed the screening of embryos for genetic disability for better selection.

Step 5: The embryos are implanted into the woman’s uterus after 3 to 5 days of fertilisation. It provides room for natural pregnancy and embryo development.

The doctors might implant different numbers of embryos depending on the woman's health. The remaining embryos will be implanted later for subsequent pregnancies or donated to others.
