What is Septum?

Septum formation is commonly witnessed in the uterus, where a membranous layer divides the pear-shaped hollow uterus into two halves. The membranous layer is called the septum and requires surgery as the only method of its excision. It is often diagnosed during unexplained pregnancy loss or miscarriages. The condition is congenital (occurring since birth) and is easily treatable, as previously stated, regardless of the age of diagnosis. The condition is rare, with a 4% chance of its development with occurrence in 1 to 15 out of 1000 women.

What Are the Types of Septate Uterus?

The extent of length defines the type of septate uterus (presence of septum in the uterus). It can be a complete or partial septate uterus. The complete septate uterus extends to the cervix and sometimes the vagina. The partial septate uterus finds the septum limited to the uterine region.

What Are the Effects of Septum on Pregnancy?

It is an asymptomatic condition, i.e., lacking any symptoms. However, the presence is evident during pregnancy complications. Here are some of the possible issues that might arise due to septum:

What is Septum Resection?

Septum removal is possible only through a surgery named hysteroscopic metroplasty. It is a minimally invasive operation performed under local anaesthesia. It is a one-hour outpatient operation (does not require a night stay at the hospital) in non-complication-associated cases.

The septum resection does not hold the possibility for regrowth, so it is a one-time procedure. The risks of the surgery are minimal but existent. They include infection, uterus perforation, abnormal bleeding, and damage to the cervix.
