During IVF, assisted reproductive technology utilises assisted hatching, which helps successfully implant the embryo in the uterus. IVF is in-vitro fertilisation, which involves fertilising the infertile eggs in the laboratory. In assisted hatching, doctors create a minute hole in the embryo’s outer shell to make it hatch and successful implantation. The small hole punched into the embryo’s shell is called zona pellucida. Natural occurring zona pellucida is thin in comparison to IVF.
Several methods are used to create the hole, which includes laser and small instruments. Zona pellucida is created on the third day of embryo development before transferring to the uterus.
