What is Ectopic Pregnancy?

The egg is supposed to be released from the ovary, pass through the fallopian tube, and get fertilised on its path. Further, it must travel into the uterus and implant itself for nutrition and proper growth. The term ectopic refers to an abnormal place or position. Implantation of an embryo anywhere but the uterus is termed ectopic pregnancy.

It is a non-conceivable pregnancy that requires timely removal to ensure the mother’s health. The expecting parents find it hard to discover their pregnancy, while non-expecting couples get shocked by the surgery requirement. However, if done timely, it is safe and does not relatively hinder the next pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy can be in the cervix, fallopian tube, abdominal part, ovary, interstitial, isthmus, and ampulla.

How Do Doctors Perform Removal of Ectopic Pregnancy?

The removal method is compulsory and non-negotiable. It depends on the symptoms associated with ectopic pregnancy and the time of its discovery. The doctors follow any of the three routes:

●       Expectant Management

The ectopic pregnancy may be present without or with mild levels of symptoms. The small size has the potential to self-dissolve and thus does not require surgical or medical intervention. The monitoring is crucial and is regularly performed through blood tests. The dissolving is expected as vaginal bleeding requiring the usage of pads or tampons. It is also accompanied by pain but lacks side effects. The chances for further treatment remain in case of an increase in the size of fertilised egg or issues with the fallopian tube remain under medical supervision.

●       Medication

The ectopic pregnancy is uncoupled with unstable bleeding and is treated by medication. The injectable drug methotrexate (to be taken under doctor’s recommendation only) prevents cell growth. It also dissolves the previously existing cells. The success, further repetition of procedure, or alternative procedure is confirmed after diagnosis via tests.

The drug also harms real pregnancy and requires waiting for three months before the next conception. It is also associated with few side effects, so the doctors recommend further prognosis.

●       Surgery

Doctors prefer keyhole or laparoscopic surgery that is minimally invasive. Performed under general anaesthesia, it is of two types: salpingostomy and salpingectomy. It requires a small incision in the abdomen or the navel. The laparoscope (a tube with a camera lens and microscope) is introduced into the tubal area to see and remove the ectopic pregnancy.

Among the two types, salpingostomy is concerned with removing ectopic pregnancy followed by leaving the tube to heal naturally. The salpingectomy is associated with the removal of both ectopic pregnancy and tube.

The procedure decision depends on the extent of bleeding, damage and the status of tube rupture and damage.
