Interpretation of Adhesions and Adhesiolysis

Adhesiolysis refers to the lysis or breakdown of adhesions. Adhesions are described as lumps of scar tissue formed inside the body. They are found at multiple locations, such as the peritoneal surface, between the organs in close proximity, such as the intestines, abdominal wall, fallopian tubes and others. These are the connections between two organs or tissues that result in pain and abnormal functionality.

Adhesiolysis is the surgical procedure operated for the removal or breakdown of adhesions. It serves two primary purposes, to return to the normal functionality of the body and reduce the associated pain.

Types of Adhesiolysis

The adhesiolysis is segregated according to the following two types:

Based on Surgery: It includes laparoscopy and open adhesiolysis.

Laparoscopic adhesiolysis is the minimally invasive surgical process that introduces a laparoscope through a keyhole shaped cut. The laparoscope is a tube consisting of light and a microscope that aids in gaining access to the inside of the body. The adhesions are cut either through a scalpel or via electric current. The doctors also introduce carbon dioxide into the area of interest for inflation and better resolution of the associated bodily space.

Open adhesiolysis is a comparatively more invasive procedure where a single large incision is performed on the body. It aids in direct visualisation and easy adhesion removal. The choice of type of surgery depends on the patient’s health, age, and medical history.

Based on Location: The adhesions are found in different body parts. Based on them, it can be pelvic adhesiolysis caused due to endometriosis or surgery. Epidural adhesiolysis to remove the adhesion between fat and vertebrae. Similarly, adnexal, peritoneal and hysteroscopic adhesiolysis techniques also exist.
