What is Polypectomy?

Polypectomy is a procedure that helps to remove a polyp, an abnormal growth of tissues inside any of the body's organs or cavities. Polyps can be a non-cancerous or cancerous tumor. They are most commonly formed in the uterus and colon. Polypectomy is recommended when serious symptoms and complications or the polyps look cancerous or precancerous.

Polyps are usually detected with colonoscopy. If it is detected, a polypectomy is performed to remove the tissue. This prevents the tissue from growing into cancerous or precancerous tissue. Polypectomy is performed to remove colon, uterine, stomach and gallbladder polyps.

How is Polypectomy Done?

A Polypectomy is similar to an endoscopic procedure in which a device with a long flexible tube and lighted camera is used. Different types of endoscopes are used to enter different body canals, such as colonoscopy for the large intestine and hysteroscopy for the uterus.

The surgeon will pass the endoscope through the throat, anus or cervix to reach the affected organ. The camera will display images of the polyps to guide the surgeon. A small surgical forceps is inserted through the endoscope to grasp and immobilize the polyp. The polyp is removed or cut at the base, but some tissue is left behind. Polyps are burnt with an electrocautery device and seal it from bleeding, ensuring the polyp does not return. This procedure generally takes an hour to complete.

When is Polypectomy Performed?

Polypectomy is done if the polyps cause the following problems such as:

Polypectomy helps relieve the symptoms and also helps in preventing colorectal, cervical, stomach and gallbladder cancer. Medcy facilitates quality, affordable and convenient medical solutions for all patients seeking Polypectomy treatment to improve their health.
