What is Myomectomy?
A myomectomy is a surgical treatment used to remove uterine fibroids (also referred to as leiomyomas) from the uterus. Growths called fibroids are composed of muscle and connective tissue cells. They may appear both inside and outside of the uterus.
The surgeon conducts a myomectomy to remove the fibroids while keeping the uterine tissues unharmed and intact to let the woman conceive in the future.
Three methods can be used to do a myomectomy:
- Abdominal Myomectomy: During abdominal myomectomy, the surgeon might remove the fibroids by making an open incision in the lower part of the abdominal region.
- Laparoscopic Myomectomy: Laparoscopic myomectomy enables the surgeon to surgically remove the fibroids using a series of small incisions.
- Hysteroscopic Myomectomy: In order to perform a hysteroscopic myomectomy, the surgeon must use a specialised scope to surgically remove the fibroids through the cervix and vaginal region.
When is a Myomectomy Needed?
If a patient has bothersome fibroids or hinders their typical activities, the doctor may advise a myomectomy. If surgery is required, the following factors are considered for a myomectomy:
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Irregular or intermenstrual bleeding
- Heavy bleeding during the period
- Unable to completely empty your bladder
- The uterine wall may be developing numerous or enormous fibroids
- If a woman plans to have children in the coming years and desires to not lose her fertility, myomectomy surgery is a suitable choice
Benefits of Myomectomy
Myomectomy is a well-known and worldwide preferred surgical procedure for women due to the following benefits:
- Myomectomy enables the surgical removal of fibroids whereas leaving the uterus healthy.
- Myomectomy could enhance reproductive results for women with fibroids who are infertile or have recurrent miscarriages. Myomectomy can improve the likelihood of a successful pregnancy by removing fibroids that might prevent the embryo's attachment or obstruct blood flow into the uterus.
- Myomectomy offers a substitute for hysterectomy, which includes completely removing the uterus.
- Additionally, it keeps the organ's normal hormonal function intact. Women might continue to have normal menstrual periods while maintaining hormonal balance.
- Compared to alternative fibroid treatment methods, myomectomy has been related to fewer pregnancy problems. After fibroids are surgically removed, future pregnancies are less likely to be impacted by their existence.
